The book of Ruth teaches us that God’s kingdom is developed not by power but by his Spirit. And how God, through Boaz and Ruth, provided for us a “savior” and “redeemer” in our Messiah.

Bible Journaling through the Conquest Era
The Judges era is a fascinating and often neglected period. It mirrors today’s church, so it has a lot of profound spiritual lessons for us.
This course covers the Judges era, which includes the book of Judges, Ruth, and first and second Samuel. I the core passage in the book of Judges is “In those days, Israel had no king, and everyone did what was right in their own eyes.”
The Book of Judges chronicles Israel’s darkest time. God instructed Israel to perform three things (Deuteronomy 7:1–5):
- Destroy all of Canaan’s population.
- Avoid mingling with the Canaanites.
- Avoid worshiping the Canaanite gods.
Israel falls short on all three counts. The violation of God’s law and Israel’s moral degeneration are both tragic.
Judges and Ruth paint two very different portraits of the Israelite people. The book of Judges shows that any time God’s people forget about the grace he has shown them, they will fall into disobedience.
The book of Judges teaches readers throughout history that the darker the human heart, the brighter the light of God’s grace. The book of Ruth teaches us that God’s kingdom is developed not by power but by his Spirit. And how God, through Boaz and Ruth, provided for us a “savior” and “redeemer” in our Messiah.

In this study, you will learn of the agony of existence without God and the wonder of God’s intervention. The chapters in Judges begin shortly after Joshua’s death when he led the Israelites into the promised land. The people are without a leader like Moses or Joshua, and they have forgotten about Yahweh. As a result, a cycle of sin, punishment, repentance, and rescue by a “judge”—a God-sent leader—recurs.
The book of Judges contains twelve judges. Seven are discussed in-depth, while the other five are merely addressed in passing. There were twelve cycles with twelve judges, however, the author only details seven cycles. We will examine each of the stories and learn how they relate to us today.
