Pre-Production
In this module Shane Hurlbut ASC takes us through his pre-production process from the moment he receives the script, and how he works with the director and the other departments to make fundamental decisions that shape the look and mood of the film.
Equipment Check-in and Prep
Here Shane walks us through the lighting toolset of a cinematographer working at the very highest level. We look at various light fixtures including HMIs, KinoFlos and tungsten lights, with Shane showing us exactly how to check and prepare each so that it’s ready to be used on set.
Power Distribution
Power on set is fundamental, but with high-power-draw lighting fixtures your production may require serious power. In this module, Shane shows you everything you need to know about power on set, including how to spec, prep and operate power generators, how to set up power distribution around your set using distribution boxes, as well as all the styles of connectors, cables and accessories you’ll need to be familiar with.
Shaping and Controlling Light
In this lesson we start by looking at the tools available to shape light, before heading outside as Shane shows us exactly how he lights day exteriors to have total control no matter what the ambient lighting condition. We then head inside to understand how to light and lens a master wide shot.
Blocking and Matching Coverage
Following the setting of the lights and the master wide, the DP needs to work with the Director and Actors to establish the blocking, or movement around the set and within the frame. Here Shane deconstructs how he collaborates on set to ensure that the teams are working as a whole and that the camera movement and composition supports the narrative of the story.
How to Light a Green Screen
Lighting a green screen can be the most challenging exercise for a DP, but in this lesson Shane breaks down a number of ways to light a green screen depending on what lighting fixtures you have available on set.
How to Light Night Interiors
In this lesson we move to an interior night scene, recreating a key moment from “Fathers & Daughters”. We look how mixing well selected practical light sources and gags mixed with moonlight or urban light can be used to create a believable and cinematic frame.
Knowing Which Lights to Use
In the final module of the course, Shane and his gaffer review their toolkit of available light fixtures and give us a complete overview of their suitability for different lighting scenarios.
