CrossFit games are a testing ground for elite fitness, and when the last bar falls to the ground and the champion is crowned, the analysis begins.
In 2007, James (OPT) FitzGerald used passion and excellent overall training to win the first edition of CrossFit Games. A year later, Jason khalipa used incredible strength and power to come out of nowhere and emerge victorious. In 2009, Mikko Salo arrived at the Fragrance and used a balance of strength, endurance and perseverance to claim the title.
After the Games, Sevan Matossian went to his hometown of Salo in Pori, Finland, to get to know the CrossFit community. What he found was Sisu.
Inherent in Finland and its people, Sisu is a form of stoic bravery and unwavering perseverance in the face of long hardships and difficulties. There are things that appear that allow a person to calmly adjust their will to perform one more repeat before putting the bar down. Whatever helps a person climb a hill when their body wants to give up. Experience the intangible quality that helps an elite athlete complete eight unknown events and become the world\’s strongest.
Sisu is perhaps best identified by Salo himself after being asked why he doesn\’t lie down after passing Frank in a crossbar chest in a time that would have put Him in first place in the 2008 crossfit competition.
\”I once read an article about this: when animals give up, they lie on their backs,\” explains Salo. \”Since then, I have decided that I will never lie on my back. Consider the sign of weakness and surrender. I never lie on my back.
This is Sisu, and this is defined by Mikko Salo.
