Story
A Tale of Two Designers
Jen and Omar built a six-figure illustration business from a single sketch and a big dream.
In 2008, Jen Adrion and Omar Noory graduated from art school and did what students do—they got good jobs working for other people. They designed great art for corporate clients and got paid well, but they wanted something different.
They wanted to make their kind of art—not art that was directed by someone else.
After a big road trip, Jen and Omar sketched a map of the places they’d been and the ones they longed to visit. They decided to sell the extra prints of the map they’d made for themselves, and a funny thing happened:
The first print run sold out in just a few hours.
Then they made another map … and that one sold out too. It wasn’t a fluke. They were on to something … they knew what to do. They made more maps and more maps sold.
Over time, business grew. Corporate clients started calling requesting custom illustrations. Stores asked to stock their maps, growing their audience even further.
They didn’t need their good studio jobs anymore.
By the end of 2013,
Jen & Omar had served more than 15,000 customers and sold more than 25,000 prints.
They’d found a way to make something they loved that a lot of other people wanted to buy—and they designed a business around it.
Now they’d like to tell you exactly how you can do it too.
Create the Art or Design Business Of Your Dreams
In The $100 Startup, Chris Guillebeau envisioned a scenario of creative self-employment:
“Imagine a life where all your time is spent on the things you want to do. Imagine giving your greatest attention to a project you create yourself, instead of working as a cog in a machine that exists to make other people rich.
Imagine handing a letter to your boss that reads, “Dear Boss, I’m writing to let you know that your services are no longer required. Thanks for everything, but I’ll be doing things my own way now.”
All over the world, this scenario is actually happening.
PLAN
A Complete Road Map to Creative Freedom
Many creatives struggle with two undesirable alternatives: take a job for a company or studio making other people’s work with little recognition, or attempt to get by on your own—struggling to sell a sufficient quantity of work at fair prices.
Fortunately, there’s a better way. The solution is bigger to create a body of work that customers line up to buy—regardless of whether you want to keep the day job or not.
